The Combo

I still have some love for the old Windows 95/98. That was the time when I learned to use a computer. I had courses on how to use it as well as the office suite, etc. Then learned VB6, Delphi on it as well and browsed the web via modem at night.

With that in mind, I kinda felt in love for IceWM. That’s just a W95/98 look-and-feel copy with low memory requirements. It’s fast and has the best alt/tab window switch – out-of-the-box – that I could find among window managers alike. It comes with batteries included! default widgets in the taskbar to show battery status, internet stuff, memory usage, cpu data, emails and the clock! It’s just perfect: simple, lightweight and familiar.

To add to this great window manager, I found XFE – X File Explorer – which is super lightweight and fits perfectly with the redmond’s look-and-feel. (I still prefer using the version 1.46 though, due to its look and less features)

I keep coming back to this combo whenever I try something else.

Another great combo that comes to mind is JWM and ROX filer – used a lot by puppies and easyos linux distros. I’ll get to them another time.
